The African Sustainable Fuels Centre was registered in South Africa as a non-profit company under Section 21 of the Companies Act, 1973 (Act No. 61 of 1973) in 2005.

ASFC’s specific objectives are:

• To inform the development agenda through the collection, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of information on biofuels in the region
• To act as a conduit for information flowing between government, industry, academia and the non-government sector
• To encourage supportive government policy around biofuels and related sectors
• To promote the use of high quality biofuels made from sustainable, low-impact feedstocks
• To support and implement biofuel related development projects
• To facilitate capacity building at all levels within the industry

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

ASFC’s board is made up of consultants, practioners and development workers with experience in Southern Africa in renewable energy and related areas. The board is supported by a growing global network of associates ranging from academic and researcher institutes, to industry associations in other countries, to international consultants who participate in implementing project work. Our particular areas of expertise are:

• Applied research and data mining
• Business planning for small and medium companies involved in the biofuel industry
• Communications, public relations and information dissemination
• Energy use in low-income households and transport systems
• Renewable energy applications in rural and urban environments, and small islands
• Development of biofuels policy, strategies and action plans at central, provincial local government level, as well as part of corporate social and environmental responsibility programmes
• Capacity building in small-scale production techniques, business planning and development, facility construction and operations.
